HOW I LEARNED TO PAINT WITH MY MOUTH

HOW I LEARNED TO PAINT WITH MY MOUTH

In 2015, my life changed forever.

A motor vehicle accident left me with a C4/C5 spinal cord injury, resulting in paralysis from the chest down. Overnight, I found myself facing challenges I had never imagined. Everyday tasks that once seemed simple now required patience, adaptation, and determination.

For a long time, I focused on rebuilding my life and learning how to navigate the world from a wheelchair. While the journey was difficult, it also taught me resilience and the importance of finding new possibilities where others might only see limitations.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I discovered something that would change my life once again: painting.

At the time, I had no formal art training and very little experience with a paintbrush. Yet I was drawn to the idea of creating something meaningful. Since I could not use my hands, I began experimenting with holding a paintbrush in my mouth. What started as a simple creative outlet quickly became a passion.

The early days were filled with challenges. Every brushstroke required concentration. Mixing colours, controlling the movement of the brush, and translating ideas onto canvas demanded patience and persistence. There were moments of frustration, but there were also moments of discovery. With every painting, I learned something new.

As my skills grew, so did my confidence.

I found inspiration in the natural world around me. African wildlife reminded me of my roots in Botswana, while the landscapes and northern skies of Canada inspired a new appreciation for the beauty of my adopted home. Through art, I began telling stories of resilience, wonder, and connection between two worlds.

Over time, painting became more than a hobby. It became a way to communicate, inspire, and connect with people from all walks of life. What began with a single brush held in my mouth has grown into a thriving artistic journey that has allowed me to share my work with collectors and supporters across Canada and beyond.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey has been seeing how people respond to the artwork. Many are surprised to learn that the paintings are created entirely by mouth. Others connect with the message behind the work: that limitations do not have to define what is possible.

My art is a reminder that creativity can flourish under unexpected circumstances and that challenges can become opportunities for growth.

Today, every painting I create reflects that belief.

Whether I am painting wildlife, northern lights, landscapes, or imaginative scenes, each piece represents perseverance, hope, and the power of adaptation. Through my work, I hope to encourage others to pursue their passions, regardless of the obstacles they may face.

The phrase “Art Without Limits” is more than a slogan. It is a reflection of my journey and a philosophy that guides everything I create.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about my story and for supporting my work. I look forward to sharing many more paintings and experiences with you in the years ahead.
